Increasing cross-border distribution and availability of mass media entail that defamatory statements in such media often have effects across borders. The current treatment of such defamatory statements is unsatisfactory for both media organisations and those who are the subject of such statements. The present thesis (written in German) proposes a harmonisation of defamation laws in the EU as a solution to the current problems. It puts forward concrete proposals for a harmonised substantive law based on a comparison of major national defamation laws and the existing jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights. It also proposes ancillary reforms of procedural law and ways of implementing the harmonisation proposal in practice.
