About this book englishenglish

This world – God's creation – is today especially affected by the disastrous anthropogenic disturbances. There are wars, poverty and environmental crises. There is a lack of compassion and love. Local contexts shape global orientations. The war in Ukraine is a case in point.

The war events of 2022 provided the impetus for the publication of this study. It attempts to answer the questions: How are local churches responding to the challenges of a time of rapid transformation? What is the role of Christian churches in the context of these historical upheavals?

Christian churches enjoy a high level of trust in Ukrainian society. They are fundamentally different from other civil society institutions in their advocacy for the common good, their influence on public awareness and social behaviour. One aim of this research is to prove that churches in Ukraine can have a lasting impact on social transformation through their social activities. The results will show how the potential of the churches is used, and whether the hypothesis that the smaller churches make the greater contribution is true. It can also be argued that the pursuit of the common good in all ist dimensions as a common goal of the churches promotes ecumenism and religious peace.

Finally, besides the divergences in the charitable work of the studied churches, a model for possible ecumenical cooperation based on diakonia is presented, emphasising a „bottom-up perspective“ and an open space for Christian civil society.

There is a considerable practical-theological dimension in learning the concepts of „ecumenical diakonia“ and „liturgy after liturgy“. Attention is also given to the concept of charity in three Church Fathers – John Chrysostom, Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen.

This study on the development of diakonia in the local – Ukrainian – context can be seen as an element in the formation of a global culture of peace.
