About this book deutschenglish

Islamic mysticism or Sufism (Tasawwuf in Arabic), has a long history. Since the time of the Prophet Muhammad – some believe even before then – its principles of unconditional surrender to God and an ethically responsible approach to man and nature have been its essential principles. Early pious believers and ascetics abstained from worldly affairs and felt over-awed by the fear of God; later mystics made the love of God the center of their world. For some of them, like Mansur al-Hallaj, the yearning for God ended in death, others, like Rabica al-cAdawiyya and her sisters, dedicated their lives to Him. Through the experiences of various stations and states that the mystics went through, the mystical path was gradually brought into a system. However, often these ecstatic experiences were difficult to reconcile with Islamic orthodoxy. While Ahmad al-Ghazzali was considered a heretic with his thoughts on love, his brother Muhammad managed, through his writings, to have a reconciling effect. Even the „greatest master” Ibn cArabi with his philosophy of the „unity of being” is by no means uncontroversial. The poems of Rumi, the tales of Farid ad-Din cAttar, the verses of Yunus Emre and Kaygusuz Abdal have become part of the literary canon and musical heritage of the Middle East and the Balkans.

The book aims to give the reader an idea of the teaching and the historical development of Sufism based on some outstanding and transformative personalities. The most important orders and brotherhoods are introduced and their development over time examined. Also their arrival, reception and effect on non-islamic societies is elucidated. Finally, an outlook on Sufism‘s possible future in the age of the globally inter-connected society is given.
