Poetry films, a film genre having a long tradition and becoming increasingly popular in the digital media, have a great potential for language teaching, in particular the teaching of foreign languages. The present study, for the purposes of teaching German as a foreign language, offers a systematic theoretical foundation of this genre. Because of its interdisciplinary approach, including semiotic film research, theories of memory and metaphor, as well as learning theory, this monograph for the first time develops a comprehensive set of analytical categories for poetry films and a survey of methods of using poetry films in the teaching process.
