About this book deutschenglish

Four years after his surprising election as bishop of Milan St. Ambrose in his first bible-exegetic publication focuses on Paradise. Obviously, this topic was best suited to him to find the proper access to the Christian community he had been entrusted with: What is the origin of evil in the world? Is there – separated from each other – a good and an evil God? Accordingly, are the Old and the New Testament compatible? These provoking questions were put in circulation, as it seems, by sects.

St. Ambrose counters them with ideas that contrast the man of Paradise gifted with a free will, with a comprehensive divine acting of mercy and with the evil in the world as a constitutive part in the concept of salvation of the one God thus establishing an immediate connection with the Old Testament. Even at the beginning of his literary activities as bishop of Milan, St. Ambrose manages to delineate a comprehensive salvation-historical concept with the help of an interpretation of Genesis texts 2,8 – 3,19. He successively widens and intensifies his considerations in his later works. This is why reading “De Paradiso” is so fascinating and interesting.

The author presents the first complete German translation of the Latin text and as far as reception analysis is concerned, offers an insight into the “theological workshop” of the bishop of Milan who said of himself that he was forced to teach while still learning.
