The work in hand is the result of my long-term preoccupation with the Korean language on the basis of German. This led to a synchronic contrastive analysis of Korean and German, which takes grammatical (adverbials, conjunctions, indirect speech), lexical (proverbs, onomatopoeia, loanwords) and pragmatic linguistic devices (Deixis) into account by applying a bilingual approach.

The determination of similarities and divergences between two languages can, however, not be restrained to a mere listing of structural conformity or non-conformity but it also has to take into consideration the diverging realization of linguistic functions. Thus a theory of linguistic functions must be an inherent part of contrastive analysis. Ordinarily the scope is laid on a language pair. Insofar linguists often appropriately speak of a bilingual language comparison. The additional value of a perspectively conducted contrastive analysis consists in the description of a language from the perspective of another language.
