About this book deutschenglish

In the light of climate change, the expansion of renewable energies receives increasing importance. Many states have set ambitious goals for this purpose. In Germany the Renewable Energy Law was launched in 2000. For many sectors such as agriculture this offers attractive investment opportunities. Besides Photovoltaic and wind energy many European agrarian states can rely on bioenergy due to the availability of agricultural land. The biogas production, in particular, was able to prevail on farms. To date, approximately 7600 such plants were built predominantly on farms. The German policy planned to expand the biogas production by 2020 significantly in order to to replace natural gas with biogas partially.

Farmers face the decision about an engagement on bioenergy through the cultivation and supply of biomass and / or biogas production. In this book, farmers’ decision behavior will be examined to identify drivers and barriers for the further development of the biogas production. Against the background of increasing criticism from experts and practitioners towards biogas, such as increased competition between food and energy production as well as the progressive presence of non-agricultural investors, special attention will be given on aspects from behavioural science, such as the conflict potential.

An important finding is that the future expansion of biogas production and thus the extent of substitution of natural gas with biogas depend mainly on the acceptance by other farmers.

Recommendations for policy and local management are derived to ensure sustainable long-term biogas production based on the results. Furthermore, for the supplying industry, such as plant manufacturers, and (non-) agricultural (bio-) energy producers, such as energy suppliers, findings allow a better positioning on the bioenergy market and acquisition of biomass suppliers and investors.
