Innovative start-ups play a decisive role in the economic development of a society. We all know companies like Apple, Facebook or Zalando, which were able to grow strongly due to the novelty of their founding idea. At the same time, millions of euros are invested in supporting start-up activities every year. However, how the founding process proceeds and which factors particularly influence it has not been researched in depth.

This monograph contributes to answering these research questions. The basis for this are almost 50 qualitative interviews with founders and experts in start-up support as well as accompanying quantitative analyses. In addition to the individual framework conditions, the influence of the university and the region should be considered as further relevant levels in the start-up process. IT start-ups from the regions of Munich, central Germany, Berlin and the Ruhr area provide the basis for the study.

One result of this work is the derivation of 13 central fields of action of the start-up process based on the interviews. This resulted in i.a. developed different types of founders. The entrepreneur with an affinity for founding a company is already shaped by his personality, role models or other influences, so that he definitely wants to take the step into self-employment. The professional opportunity user, on the other hand, decides to found a company because it represents the logical next step or the best career alternative. For regional and global innovators, the focus is on realizing an idea.

Depending on the type of founder, the growth prospects, challenges and support needs of entrepreneurs vary. On the one hand, this knowledge about the differences between business start-ups must be disseminated and, on the other hand, it must be used when designing start-up support.
