Individual private universities in Germany got the opportunity to establish elite qualifying structures in recent years. These structures will in future enable them to institutionalize the mechanisms of reproducing the German business elite, which is as influential as socially-exclusive in German society. As this study demonstrates in detail, the private universities benefit not only from their own efforts, but can also take advantage of the results of educational frameworks, such as the Bologna reform or the german Excellence Initiative.

The focus of the study is on particular chosen private universities like the Bucerius Law School, the EBS – Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht and the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. These private educational institutions are analysed in terms of the constitution of its faculties, the impact of funding and routes in the context of elite education, the opportunities to create distinctive and potential elite-qualifying academic degrees as well as the selection and segregation processes in student education. Finally the results get verified in comparison with international elite universities and the influence of the secondary private education sector in Germany on the possibilities and limits of elite reproduction at private educational institutions will be demonstrated.

The study succeeds by prooving that the previously dominating assumption, that there is a structural irrelevance of the private higher education sector for the reproduction of the German economic elite, may be rejected. Therefore in the final chapter the impact of a development of private higher education institutions for the recruitment of German business elite are presented in terms of the societal consequences and the influences on the theoretical discourse in Germany.
