This thesis examines the narrative dimensions of religion in current children’s literature. This is necessary because religious dimensions in children’s literature have increased since the religious turn in 2000. Moreover, German and literary didactics have not sufficiently focused on them yet. The dominating theological research emphasizes the topics and does not highlight the literary genre of epic poetry.

This thesis, however, stresses the presence of religion in linguistics and narration. Therefore, the author has chosen the following structure for his thesis.

First, he gives a definition of religion in current children’s literature.

In the second chapter he explains his choice of the 24 novels and examines the reasons and effects of religion in children’s literature in chapter three. Chapter four focuses on the development of a system (“Religious narrative dimensions in current children’s literature”) based on the approach Matias Martinez and Michael Scheffel have dealt with. To be able to define and form the categories (“Children’s literature with a dimension of religious action and religious background”) as well as the subcategories and types, 24 novels have been selected and analyzed.

This precise system of categories can offer orientation when it comes to the choice of novels as well as future contexts of learning about and teaching literature.
