In this paper (BIBLE) TRANSLATION IN MISSIOLOGICAL THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION: A Critical Examination of the Influence of Theological Content and Terms from English and German Dictionaries, Lexicons, and Commentaries on (Bible) Translation Practice, the influence of common translation practices in the field of the science of Bible translation is examined. Based on the findings from the aids to biblical exegesis, the most well-known English and German dictionaries, lexicons and commentaries as well as other aids to exegesis come under scrutiny. Theological lexicons and dictionaries form the basis for translational decisions. Their impact on missiological and theological education with regard to the application of insights from translation studies presents the main focus. Commentaries on biblical content summarise the results and present possible interpretive options. While they themselves provide philologically concordant translation suggestions, they are of little help when it comes to contextualised translation into a linguistic and cultural context. But more on this later.

One goal of this presentation is to highlight those methods of selection for translation that have been and continue to be used historically in theologically relevant works. This translation process is primarily concerned with translating the basic text of the Hebrew Bible (BHS4) and the New Testament (NA28) into a native idiom, rather than translating from existing Bible translations. Another aim is to show with examples how modern translation methods from the sciences of communication and translation can serve to achieve the church’s claim of an “accurate” and yet “understandable” translation of the Bible already in missiological and theological education. At the centre of this study are first of all missiological considerations, then theological-hermeneutical substructures, then the translational-linguistic and finally the practical-theological basis of the science of Bible translation.
