About this book deutschenglish

Whether plague, tuberculosis, diphtheria, cholera, polio or currently Covid-19 – the threat to human life from a potentially deadly disease runs through the entire human history. These diseases, due to their epidemic or pandemic dimension, are able to shake entire societies and threaten their constitution. Unlike health, which is the normal state of affairs for most people, the outbreak of an epidemic or pandemic shows a global state of emergency. This results in various, sometimes reasonable, unfortunately not always or at least not always comprehensible, sometimes unfortunately radical, rules of conduct. For this reason, the research question arises as to possible fundamental reactions and behavior of people in such phases of exceptional states. The focus of attention is the collective handling of the epidemic phenomenon, which calls social cohesion into question. This treatise therefore asks about patterns of collective coping with illness using the example of literary works. Nine texts got selected in total for an abstract of the history, which together represent a period of eight centuries. The focus is on a multi-perspective comparison of social behavior patterns in response to threats from epidemics and pandemics. In conclusion, a first approach to the central questions can be made as to whether patterns of human behavior remain indifferent on variation in time and despite progress, such as in access to information and in sciences – and further on, if no significant societal gains in experience and improved handling of the repeated outbreak of such a crisis can be identified.
