In this conference volume on the 2^nd Interdisciplinary Doctoral Conference at the Andrássy University of Budapest, approaches to current developments and challenges of the European Union are elaborated. Special attention within the contributions is given to the role of institutions. As man-made rules and laws that constrain political, economic, and social interactions within societies (Douglas C. North), institutions play a key role in transforming a highly regionally diverse EU into a supra-regional entity that can deal with occurring problems in a coherent manner. The spectrum of contributions from economic, political science, and history perspectives reflects the interdisciplinary character of the conference volume and illustrates the added value of examining complex issues from different perspectives.
