Benchmarking is widely used in business practice. Nevertheless, there are oftentimes indications for application difficulties and a lack of project success. This widely leads to resistances to benchmarking. One of the interview partners sums up these reservations against benchmarking projects with the words: "Comparison is the root of all misfortune". Surprisingly, there is a lack of cross-project and cross-company studies on the success factors of benchmarking. In particular, the goals and interests of the involved stakeholders as well as the conditions for a successful transfer of best practices are largely unexplored. The present study addresses these problems by systematically analyzing the challenges in the course of benchmarking by means of qualitative expert interviews. For a comprehensive picture, expert consultations were conducted with consultants, operational staff, project managers and representatives of top management in the energy industry. The focus of the investigation is on possible principal-agent problems and the prerequisites for organizational learning. The central component of this work is, among other things, an overview of the challenges arising in the course of benchmarking, which are assigned to the individual phases of the benchmarking process. Furthermore, success factors are identified and recommendations for actions are derived from the discussion of their interactions. The study shows, for example, how acceptance by the staff can be ensured and operational resistance can be avoided. The work also deals with the tasks of controlling in the course of benchmarking projects and recommendations for the design of controlling for benchmarking projects are given. The work thus targets equally at representatives from practice and science.
