For several decades now, it has become more and more accepted in the academic literature that inventors or rather discoverers of critical facts are not mentioned by name, as it is for example the case with books concerning materials engineering. Therefore, students are no longer able to draw conclusions concerning the significance of scientific papers from their inventors. To counteract this trend, the author wrote the book at hand “Eduard MAURER – The biography” with the subtitle “life and work of a famous steel metallurgist”, about the life and work of a well-known scientist in the steel sector, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Eduard MAURER. Because this metallurgist’s name, MAURER, belongs among those in the history of the metallurgy of iron that must not die out.
His name recognition results from trend-setting research findings, among others, in the fields of:
- the development of the conventional theory of hardening (Maurer’s Austenite)
- the development of stainless steel containing 18% chrome and 8% nickel (together with Benno STRAUSS)
- the formulation of the famous cast iron diagram (Maurer’s cast iron diagram)
- the thermal treatment of large forgings and
- his professorship in the field of the metallurgy of iron at the Bergakademie Freiberg (Bergakademie Freiberg is the name of the Technical University in Freiberg).
In this book, the attempt to characterise Maurer's personality is made, which is distinguished by his readiness for action, his willingness to take on responsibility and by his comprehensive publications (more than 100 are mentioned in the book).
This variety of MAURER’s publications in academic journals (e.g. Archiv für das Eisenhüttenwesen, Kruppsche Monatshefte, Stahl und Eisen, Neue Hütte, Gießereizeitung, Die Technik and many others), as well as in papers of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin and notices from the research institute for iron in Henningsdorf near Berlin, makes it hard to get an oversight of his works.
The author of the book at hand has therefore collected numerous publications by MAURER from various magazines and has outlined them chronologically in this book. It is intended to help students and teachers in the field of metallurgy to gain an overview of the extensive work of MAURER. Some of the publications, which are characteristic of the above mentioned trend-setting research findings, were mentioned in their entirety in this book.
Eduard MAURER made a significant historic contribution to the development of metallurgy with his academic work.
Hence, this book may find its way to the public in memory of Eduard MAURER.
