Rezensionen

About this book deutschenglish

In a major part of family-like institutions for public education like foster care not just the foster children but also the biological children of the professional caregivers live. Most children cared by child and youth services have suffered deep emotional wounds and traumas in their past, which poses a high challenge to the professional educators. The adult helpers are usually provided with an extensive professional and supportive network in order to cope with such a demanding job. For the biological children no supporting structures have been established, although they are exposed to similar requirements and effects.

Biological children play an important role within the setting. It is safe to assume that a failure of such youth welfare settings is often caused by high, untreated intra-family conflict potentials.

Jörg Harder, who has accumulated years of experience in foster care with his family, dealt extensively with this issue. Using theoretical approaches of developmental psychology he analyzed whether the biological children are exposed to specific psycho-social risk and protective factors that may influence their development. Based on these results and the current state of research he considered the need for special assistance for these children and young people.

If you look at the history of professional foster care, the cared children were in primary focus of external support at first. Later on it was realized that support of the educators in foster care by competent advice or supervision is extremely important.

Now it is time to widen the horizon and provide adequate support to the biological children of foster carers and also grant validation of their performance.
