About this book deutschenglish

In order to reduce energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, wind power and photovoltaic plants are being intensively expanded in Germany. As a result, power generation is becoming increasingly dependent on the energy supply from the sun and wind and thus more volatile. As a result, there is a need for further flexibilization of the energy system in order to enable a comprehensive utilization of fluctuatingly available amounts of energy.

Against this background, this elaboration develops, demonstrates and evaluates a cross-sectoral concept of demand flexibility including an operation and control approach. The concept envisages an installation of heating cartridges in existing thermal energy storage systems of residential households, which can flexibly and situationally utilize otherwise unused electrical energy. The thermal energy, which is supplied by the heating cartridges, in turn substitutes fossil fuels otherwise used for heating purposes and thus supports the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the heating sector.

The developed operating and control concept is oriented to the electricity market in that it uses electricity prices to decide on the timing of the heating cartridge operation. Participation in the electricity market, in turn, requires that the heating cartridge operation can be reliably planned and realized, taking into account the temporal framework of electricity trading. For this purpose, the developed control concept first identifies reasonable operating times with the help of electricity price forecasts. Based on this, using measurement data recorded in the respective residential heating system, the realizable demand potentials are calculated, which can then be traded on the electricity market.

The developed approach is conceptually validated in this thesis on the basis of measurement data and results from a demonstration phase of a heating cartridge operation. It is shown that the operation can be reliably planned with the help of the developed concept and can thus meet the requirements defined by the electricity market. The subsequent simulation-based evaluation of the concept also shows that operation of heating cartridges oriented to the electricity market could enable the utilization of otherwise potentially unused energy at a scale relevant to the energy industry and thus actively contribute to saving greenhouse gas emissions in the heating sector.
