About this book deutschenglish

Depressive disorders represent a major challenge for health care systems. If left untreated, depression leads to more visits to the doctor, relapses and chronicity and, last but not least, to great suffering for those affected. The most frequently used form of therapy is pharmacotherapy. In this context, public pharmacies play a major role in ensuring clinical care by providing low-threshold counselling on drug-related issues - be it in the area of self-medication or in the initial and follow-up prescription of antidepressants. However, although antidepressants have proven to be effective treatment strategies for depression, therapies are often discontinued too early. Most of the time, a lack of information or prejudices regarding effects and side effects stand in the way of a successful therapy. This can be counteracted by offering patients with depression comprehensive competent counselling and care. It is therefore of central importance which understanding and which knowledge prevail among the actors working in the health system.

The study "Depressionsberatung in der Apotheke" is the first to deal with the counselling situation and the empathy of pharmacists in Germany for depressed patients. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of social distance and the issue of stigma. The methodology includes the implementation of a non-controlled intervention study with pre-post evaluation of the target parameters at three time points: before, immediately after and six months after a targeted training seminar for pharmacists. Three-part evaluation records demographic data, personal attitudes and the current subject-related level of knowledge of the participants. It is based on measuring instruments from previous international publications.

The evaluations describe the extent to which intervention trainings on depressive disorders, which are specifically tailored to public pharmacists, lead to measurable changes among pharmacists and their staff with regard to understanding, professional knowledge of depression treatment and subjective counselling confidence.
