Due to a high capacity factor and a steady electricity generation, offshore wind power can contribute to a more reliable and sustainable energy supply from renewable energy in the future. For a further development of offshore wind energy in Germany and Europe, it is crucial to achieve a significant reduction in the levelized cost of electricity. But as future wind farms are expected to be built mostly on sites with greater distances to shore and larger water depths, the costs are likely to rise further.
The objective of this dissertation is to develop and apply a methodical approach to derive development options for the offshore wind energy utilization and to analyze and assess these with regard to technical, economic and ecological aspects. For this purpose, it is necessary to identify the essential concepts of the plant technology, in construction, operation and decommissioning on a component or process level. With regard to the year 2013, these concepts are analyzed and characterized in terms of technical and systemic parameters. Based on these results, possible developments are predicted over a short-term as well as a medium-term period and assessed using economic and environmental indicators. The outcome is intended to allow an evaluation in which technical, economic and environmental corridor the offshore wind power industry could be by 2030 compared to the present state of the art based on different assumptions and framework development trends.
