about this bookdeutsch english
The work at hand develops a constructive and operative theory of understanding. To reach this goal, first the work develops a powerful standard theory of understanding that relies on the keystones realism, truth and systematicity. The problems of this theory are discussed in detail. Then several different conservative extensions of the standard theory are tested with respect to their power to solve these problems – namely the theory of belief change of Gärdenfors, the theory of belief change of Levi, the situation theory of Barwise and Perry and (by a formal link with situation theory) the theory of possible worlds by Lewis. But with no conservative extension the problems can be solved. The dissertation then develops a constructive-operative theory of understanding including an operationalistic concept of agency and a scaled concept of rationality, which form the base of rational understanding. With the help of the theory of conceptual neighborhoods and method engineering the possibility of constructing alternative frameworks of understanding is explored. An important result of this work is finally the rejection of universal and general guarantees of understanding. These reasoned boundaries of understanding are discussed in accord with the hypothesis of commensurability and man-machine-interaction.
