This monograph focuses on some themes of the current discussion of the methods of analytic philosophy and considers how the founders of this tradition use the method of analysis. They employ it to determine the meaning and the logical form of expressions, to define concepts, to discover concepts which can be used as indefinables required to construct a system of scientific or philosophical propositions, and to establish the fundamental propositions from which the propositions of such a system can be derived. The analytic procedure applied in a particular case can be characterized by principles that guide this application. The book defines principles of that kind as well as requirements resulting from their acceptance for some theories offered by Frege, Russell, Moore and Wittgenstein and discusses the meaning analysis proposed by Schlick. Insofar as both the use and the notion of analysis generate various problems and hence doubts concerning the utility of this method the book examines also some of those problems. In this context an attempt to characterize the kind of understanding that can be acquired by using the analytic method is presented.
