Ruth Klüger's autobiographical texts occupy a special position within the German literature. Portrayals of persecution, Holocaust, and exile are combined with reflections on the possibilities and limits of autobiographical writing and the female-Jewish perspective taken in it.

The investigation is dedicated to a corpus of three autobiographical texts by Ruth Klüger: weiter leben, Still Alive and unterwegs verloren. The study is based on the view that Klüger's work should be considered in its entirety to enable understanding of the author’s autobiographical identity project. New is therefore the monographic access, as well as the investigation of the poems contained in the autobiographies and the scientific publications of the author as a Germanist. Also new is the partially applied comparative view, which correlates Klüger's autobiographies with those of other Shoah survivors.

The study is composed of the following main topics:
What self-reflexive approach does Ruth Klüger select in her autobiographical texts in order to deal with memory and identity? The study identifies "Zeitschaft", a neologism created by Klüger, "ghosts" as vivid forms of involuntary remembrance, as well as memory and identity as key concepts in Klüger's work.

This study pursues the hypothesis that Klüger uses the literary medium of the autobiography anew, in order to lend her memories a certain form of aesthetic staging, for example through the use of performative elements.

This strongly emphasized approach to self-assertion finds its expression among others in a Jewish-feminist point of view that forms the basis for a unique view of the Shoah.

This approach must be explained and classified in order to show which structures permeate Klüger's works. The investigation employs an accurate textual analysis of Klüger's poems, which have so far been neglected in research. The poems contained in all three autobiographies make a significant contribution to literary memory work.
