About this book deutschenglish
The extensive debate on whether or not double transtibial amputee runner Oscar Pistorius would have a considerable advantage over able-bodied runners at the 2008 Olympic Games of Beijing put forth the concern that human technology has started to get the better of nature. So far, no evidence exists for a similar development in walking. In fact, it is the walking gait that causes challenges in prosthetic research when trying to help amputees walk more naturally. Quite the opposite circulates the field of robotics. Countless robots are happily walking about as long as they are sufficiently fueled and not presented with too terribly unexpected disturbances. Running robots on the other hand are still a rare species and most of those you find are rather borderline walkers.
There is a lack of generally accepted basic understanding of human gait mechanics. Evaluation and validation of theoretical and technical models, their significance and predictions need a substantial base of data. Such an extensive database including leg and joint function of human walking and running at wide ranges of speed is provided in this book to enhance knowledge and understanding of human gait. It establishes a fundamental base of experimental data and seeks deeper basic mechanical understanding of global and internal leg behavior. Keeping in mind that one and the same bipedal system achieves both gaits, similarities between walking and running are the starting point of investigations with differences and distinctions consequential.
