The objective of this thesis has been to point out in detail in how far, after more than a century and a half of a policy of attempted as­sim­i­la­tion to 'Pakeha' ideals, subjugation to cultural domination by the white majority and suppression of native life, culture, tradition and history, Alan Duff's works still present remnants and reminders of traditional ways. How are urban Maori coping with this policy of attempted as­sim­i­la­tion and the effects of the various degrees and stages of acculturation, and what examples are there of partial, direct or indirect persistence? The research presented in this thesis endeavours to trace continuities from pre-colonial via colonial to post-colonial histories and development as the area and period for investigation. How far have indigenous life and society, culture, values and identity prevailed, and how much were they influenced, assimilated, and acculturated by the impact of a foreign cul­ture, or have remained intact? Are there still references to the original culture, way of life, expressions, behaviour, etc. in the every-day lives, thoughts and conversations of the urban Maori on the tough side of town? Have the Maori resisted the enduring assimilationist pressure and influence of the white man's manner in an acculturated or persistent form?

Since orality plays an overwhelming part in the transfer of Maori culture into our days, the language aspect is attended to, finally approaching Alan Duff's special style and imitative language. A limited, but, nev­er­the­less, typical, partly special vocabulary, often used in a most telling and authentic way may be seen and used as an identifying factor of Maoriness.
