Cooperations in the Context of Digital Transformation – An Empirical Analysis of the Participation of German Start-ups
Digital transformation is one of the most significant economic and societal challenges of our time. It is rapidly reshaping business models, industry structures, and innovation processes. For start-ups operating in the core areas of this transformation, new opportunities arise—but so do challenges. However, innovation does not happen in isolation—cooperations between start-ups and established companies can be crucial for maintaining long-term competitiveness.
This dissertation examines how German start-ups that focus on key digital transformation technologies collaborate with established companies and other external stakeholders. It explores the following key questions:
- What forms of cooperation exist between start-ups and established companies?
- What benefits do start-ups gain from these collaborations?
- Can start-ups succeed in the market without cooperation?
Based on a qualitative empirical analysis, this study provides insights into the dynamics, opportunities, and challenges of cooperative innovation processes. The findings highlight that partnerships not only accelerate innovation but also create strategic competitive advantages for both start-ups and established firms.
This dissertation is aimed at researchers, corporate strategists, investors, and policymakers involved in innovation promotion, business collaborations, and digital transformation. It offers not only a solid theoretical foundation but also practical recommendations for shaping successful innovation partnerships in a dynamic market environment.
