About this book englishenglish

When working with people who have autism, whether they have complex impairments or not, one inevitably encounters the topic of challenging behavior. Institutions, educators, and parents try to meet the daily challenges of their children or the individuals they are accompanying. Since challenging situations occur more and more frequently, it is not uncommon for people to ask themselves what is the right way to deal with autistic people, how do we deal with challenging situations together? And how do we react correctly to challenging behavior that is unusual for the person on the outside? To find answers to these questions, an intensive engagement with the topic of autism is necessary.

This book offers a positive perspective on autism and about autistic cognition. Derived from the definitions in DSM-5 and ICD-11, ranging from the differentiation of intellectual or complex impairments and developmental disorders, in combination with comorbid conditions, to a strengths-based representation, the various facets of autism are depicted.

Understanding autism takes center stage in order to recognize specific reactions and behaviors, such as overload, meltdown, and shutdown, and respond to them appropriately. The goal is to no longer see challenging behavior as a symptom of autism, but rather to reconsider the external conditions, external challenges, and interactions with autistic individuals.

In the second part of the book, based on an empirical study conducted through surveys, educators who illustrate the greatest difficulties in various institutions in their everyday support efforts are featured. Some practical examples from daily life and educational approaches, such as positive behavior support or the TEACCH approach, are intended to guide educators toward better collaboration.
