‘Faith, Iove, hope’ – this saying from the Ietter to the Corinthians is meant to give comfort. Comfort in existential threats, in illness and dying. Religious education is still taught at school in almost all German states. But under the conditions of cultural diversity, religious diversity, and technological development, both the mission and the impact of the subject of religion are eroding. lt is in a crisis of legitimacy. The text therefore argues for the general introduction of studies in religious concepts, traditions and history.

The study of Iiterature as part of German lessons is in a comparable crisis. The German national self-image, which was also conveyed through the literary canon, no Ionger counts. Parents and adolescents demand that the subject develop other competencies. And yet, young readers still enjoy literary narratives. The ethical values by which literary characters act provoke their approval or disapproval. They appeal to faith, Iove, and hope or disappoint the expectations of their readership. At this point, religious orientations meet moral orientations and their justifications.

Literary education can contribute its influence on normative attitudes through age- and developmentally appropriate text selection. lts impact lies in the clarification of individual positions vis-à-vis the normative statements of the text. These classroom experiences can become the basis of a biographical narrative. For this is the medium in which faith, Iove and hope receive an individual conceptual and emotional anchoring.
