In a longitudinal study at three measurement points, it was investigated with over 200 children over three years whether working memory can be trained in preschool age.

The children were divided into three groups (two training groups and an active control group) and trained with their parents for five weeks each. While the training groups used recognised methods to train working memory, the children in the control group worked with movement training.

The children's academic (precursor) skills, attentional performance and a behavioural assessment by their parents/caregivers and teachers were assessed before and after the training and six months after enrolment.

This showed an increase in working memory capacity in all three groups, i.e. also in the active control group, but no transfer effects on the academic (precursor) skills, the children's behaviour or even the parental stress experience.
