This book presents a description and a comparison of tense systems in modern Slavic languages. The investigated languages are Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian. The choice of the languages allowed not only the comparison of languages from different Slavic language groups but also the comparison of languages within one group. The focus of the investigation lies on finite verb forms and some other verbal constructions, which express tense. A critical overview of the most important linguistic theories presents and discusses different approaches to the functional description of tense systems. The theoretical part focuses on temporality and its place in general linguistic research. The analysis of the tense system of each particular language aims to present formational patterns of the tense forms and their temporal functions. A general overview of a particular tense system from a synchronic point of view is given at the end of each chapter. The research reveals the differences in usage of tense and aspect forms in the investigated language as well as functional differences of the same tenses in different languages, for example the usage of Aorist in Bulgarian and Serbian. Finally, the research presents a new view of the tense systems of modern Slavic languages and gives an outline of the direction of their development in the present time.
