About this book deutschenglish

This volume covers research work done over the past 20 years on the subjects of metaphor, metonymy, and translation with their respective sub-topics and mutual connections and interdependencies. Almost all articles in this volume are re-publications of earlier contributions from various journals and anthologies, which are often difficult to access or are not available in digitized form (online) to this day. Another reason for the renewed publication stems from the current global political events since February 24, 2022, according to which there is a risk that publications in Russia will either come under general suspicion and thus be ignored by the West or possibly no longer due to embargo and sanctions for the West be accessible, so that the author’s publications in Russia and Belarus in particular are now available in book form.

The volume is divided into three sections, “Cognitive-linguistic Categories and Concepts”, “Selected Vocabulary Areas”, and “Translation Studies” with respective sub-sections, of which the sub-section “Audiovisual Translation” containing previously unpublished works, that is, first, a theoretical contribution to the concept of audio description; second, a study on the translation of culture-bound words from English into German based on the novel True Grit and its filmic adaptations of the same name. With a length of almost 100 pages, this study could appear as an independent work, but it should be read and understood as a continuing work to the author’s monograph from 2015, in which the translation of culture-bound words in the Grimm’s Fairy Tales is discussed. The core questions of the mutual relationships between contiguity, metonymy, and translation, which are highlighted in the concluding theoretical discussion of this study (and of the entire volume, respectively), are intended to contribute to a lively discussion on this complex of topics.
