The Adriatic Sea is a valuable natural resource for its coastal States, but it is already exposed to a diverse range of inputs and pressures, largely stemming from anthropogenic activities such as tourism, maritime transportation etc. Such uses of the Adriatic Sea have detrimental effects on its marine environment, particularly because the Adriatic Sea is a shallow, warm sea with slow tide exchange. The Adriatic Sea is a sub-region of the wider Mediterranean Sea.This study deals with the regime of protection and preservation of the marine environment of enclosed and semi-enclosed seas, with particular reference to the Adriatic Sea.
One of the mechanisms for the protection and preservation of the marine environment is the extension of coastal State jurisdiction. The Adriatic coastal States have not yet proclaimed the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). The most important steps taken in the framework of the regional seas programme for the protection and preservation of the marine environment ought to be seen in the adoption of the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution (Barcelona Convention), including its Protocols.
The Adriatic Sea is an intensive maritime shipping route and, as a corollary, as area exposed to high levels of pollution from ships. The instruments for the protection of the marine environment from ships are: Special Areas and Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas. The Mediterranean and the Adriatic are a Special Area in accordance with Annexes I and V of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78).
A comparison is made between two seas, the Adriatic and the Baltic Sea, which makes this work of interest not only for scholars interested in the Adriatic Sea but also for those who are interested in different aspects of the Baltic Sea.
