Rezension

About this book deutschenglish

For soccer-goalkeepers correct anticipation is often necessary to successfully parry shots on the goal. Up until now anticipation of goalkeepers has solely been investigated in penalty situations. To analyse the anticipation behaviour in more complex game situations, a two-part laboratory study was designed. The aim was to conceive and evaluate a cognitive performance diagnostics for soccer-goalkeepers. In both sub-studies the participants had to anticipate the shot direction from videos showing goalshots. In sub-study 1 the temporal occlusion-paradigm was applied, meaning that the videos were stopped at different points in time. In sub-study 2 the participants determined the response time by stopping the video themselves (reaction time-paradigm). Both the anticipation-performance and the gaze movement via eye-tracking-system were recorded. 76 goalkeepers were tested, including 44 goalkeepers from U15 and U18 regional association teams. The analyses showed that the response time-paradigm is more suitable for a future use as performance diagnostics. Regarding the content analyses, an influence of the research method on the results could be proven. On the behavioural level, the results showed that the anticipation performance increased with rising information contents and that the horizontal shooting direction is easier to anticipate compared to the vertical direction. Additionally, anticipation performance depends on the situation complexity. Group comparisons detected that more experienced goal keepers consistently delivered a better anticipation performance. On the cognitive level, differences in gaze behaviour between correctly and wrongly anticipated shots were observed. Furthermore, a dependency of gaze behaviour on the situation complexity was detected and experience-based differences were found. The non-kicking leg of the shooter was identified as the most anticipation-relevant area. Another central conclusion was that it is problematic to transfer the findings in the literature, which are based primarily on penalty situations, to more complex situations. In summary, it can be stated that with the experimental setting of sub-study 2 the foundation is laid to receive – after a few modifications – an eligible instrument, which can be used as a cognitive performance diagnostic for soccer-goalkeepers.
