Since the 1970s and 1980s, connections between word formation and text linguistics have been investigated more and more frequently. At the center of both linguistic sub-disciplines are both text-constitutive and text-distinctive functions of word formation.
Certain word formation models are compatible with certain textual requirements or generic features. Word formation constructions appear in certain text types as high-frequency and systematic cohesive and coherent textual means, but in other text locations they hardly play a role in text design. With the help of word formations, types of text can be differentiated from one another, which is why they can also be treated as identifiers for a specific type of text.
The subject of the work is the contrastive study of word formation from the perspective of ist use in fairy tale and novella texts. The work fits into the currently intensively discussed word formation discourse and represents a certain contribution towards a new text type-oriented model of word formation research.
The aim of the study is to determine and analyze the adjectival and verbal compositions in fairy tale texts that are in the text type " Fairy tales” are typically used. The extent to which adjective and verb compounds are productive and which structural patterns predominate is analyzed. The text-distinguishing function of these word formation constructions helps to create the prototypical characteristics of the “fairy tale” text type and to distinguish it from others. For the purpose of comparison, the same word formation structures were analyzed in novella texts.
The following conclusions can be drawn from the study results: Adjective compounds occur more frequently in novella texts compared to fairy tales, while verb compounds have a larger percentage of word formation phenomena in fairy tales.
