About this book deutschenglish

The pressure to justify cost-intensive long-term psychotherapies requires studies that examine the specific effects of these long-term treatments. In the present study, a naturalistic mixed-methods design is used to examine the effects of the long-term psychoanalytic therapies of 17 patients with complex psychological diagnoses. The long-term stability of the therapy success is of central interest. Criteria for measuring success are the changes that are obtained during treatment and also in a follow-up assessment, in particular psychological structural change, measured with the Heidelberg Structural Change Scale, and changes in symptom distress, measured with the SCL-90-R. The follow-up assessment is highly relevant for the observation of long-term stability of the therapy success. Thus, in addition to the group examination, four individual cases are subjected to a further follow-up assessment approximately ten years after the first follow-up assessment in order to examine the long-term effects of the psychotherapies. The results support the assumption that psychoanalytic therapies can bring about comprehensive psychological structural change, going beyond symptom reduction. In addition, the individual case analyses suggest that these inner-psychic changes can also have a postanalytic effect. Methodologically, it can be stated that the combination of quantitative and qualitative data analysis provides a better understanding of the results and is therefore preferable to mono-method designs. Due to the naturalistic study design, the results are highly relevant to practice.
