About this book deutschenglish
The anthology “Deutsch und Polnisch im Kontakt mit anderen Sprachen” [German and Polish in contact with other languages] was produced on the occasion of the anniversary “500 years of German-Polish phrasebooks”. The aforementioned type of text deserves special attention, because it – as a communication aid – has ensured mutual understanding uninterruptedly over the centuries up to the present day. Moreover, its long existence is an undeniable proof of people’s communicative needs, not only intra- but also interlingual. Therefore the contributions collected here deal with broadly understood language contacts, fanned out into a broader linguistic spectrum. The aim here is to convince people of the importance of interpersonal communication in a multidimensional context.
Since, on principle, the use of phrasebooks takes place in bicultural (or multicultural) settings, the contributions in this volume refer to aspects of language use in bilingual or multilingual contexts. A broad perspective of the topic dealt with here is ensured thanks to the authors from Germany, Austria and Poland, to whom heartfelt thanks are expressed here.
The contributions collected here relate to the following topics:
The following topics are addressed:
- bilingual phrasebooks, specifically for the language pairs: German-Polish, German-Icelandic, German-Turkish and Danish-Polish,
- bilingual (medical) lexicography (for the language pairs: German-Polish and English-Polish),
- cultural contrastive studies on language use (press discourse in relation to selected German, British and Italian editorials on the NSA scandal, characterisation of Brick Pollitt from Tennessee Williams’ drama „Cat on the Hot Tin Roof“ from the pragmastylistic perspective based on dialogues in English and Polish, the phenomenon of code-switching in relation to Russian-speaking population groups in Germany),
- foreign language didactic issues (pluricentrism in the area of regional studies, ideologically charged content using the example of a DaF textbook for Romanian learners in the 1980s).
