About this book deutschenglish

The book offers an overview of the current linguistic and social situation of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina which clearly demonstrates the turbulent events of the 1990s. The study is based on an explorative research conducted in three cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Banja Luka, Mostar and Sarajevo. The corpus analysis primarily focuses on the attitudes of Croatian speakers (although other nationalities are represented as well) towards the current linguistic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and their mother tongue. A further object of analysis is the language practice of the speakers as reflected in the use of nationally marked language units.

It is important to mention that the basis of the collected research corpus is twofold. The first part of the corpus is made up of interviews conducted among adults over the age of 18. These interviewees bear witness to the time when intense social and political changes took place on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which had as a consequence an intense revalorization of various components of linguistic and social identity (the interviews are available on a cd attached to the book). The second part of the corpus consists of the data obtained through a written survey conducted among gymnasium students. The results of this part of the study are particularly interesting given the fact that the students were taught only one standard language norm instead of the previously taught common Serbocroatian language norm.

The study gives a new insight into the Croatian language in Bosnia and Herzegovina and shows clearly that the symbolic and communicative factors are determinant for the linguistic identity of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Furthermore, the study opens up a number of significant research questions about the future of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
