The terms “digitalization” and “digital transformation” have become buzzwords in the daily discussion of society. Although the two terms are often used synonymously, they address different aspects in connection with the current technological change in our society. While “digitalization” is understood as the introduction of new solutions based on digital technologies, “digital transformation” rather addresses the implementation process induced by digitalization. At the beginning there is the digitalization (e.g. of a process step in a business model) which heralds the change of the current state. Digitalization is followed by digital transformation in the form of a change process that ultimately leads to (fundamental) changes in a business model and, in extreme cases, can even mean obsolescence.

This anthology covers a spectrum of topics on digitalization and the subsequent digital transformation of business models and ranges from concrete examples in already existing (partly analogue) business models, to the use of innovative IT technologies and their social effects, to an analysis of how political decision-makers should behave in connection with these changes and to what extent we can speak of disintermediation in the context of digitalization and digital transformation.
