about this book deutsch english
Battle addresses in the Middle Ages, especially in the Early and High Middle Ages, have so far attracted only little attention in Medieval Studies. Description and analysis of battle addresses have mostly been marginal, due to medieval historians putting emphasis on the presentation of the battle, its causes, its development and aftermath and elaborating on these issues. In contrast, battle addresses conveying spoken word can only be found in a limited number of written sources from this period.
The research conducted in this thesis on the battle addresses of Henry the Fowler, Otto the Great, Olaf II Haraldsson, William the Conqueror and the crusader Bohemond I depicts kings and rulers from different regions and centuries. The thesis shows that each historian created an image of „his“ ruler by putting carefully chosen words into his mouth. However, these words not only served as a means to display the king or ruler as a great general or strategist, in fact, they were the medium of an author-specific message. This message not only provided an opportunity to interpret, explain and understand the past, the present or the future according to the author, but also functioned as a means to convey political ideals and attitudes. At the same time, the addresses facilitate an individual and author-specific image of divine rule by displaying performative acts. Thus, battle addresses incorporate rules, values and norms, which can be categorised or attributed to certain functions. This enables the possibility of a classification according to author intention and recipient influence.
