About this book deutschenglish

Continuous innovations are crucial for a company’s competitiveness and survival. As the innovation process is usually not isolated within a single company, innovation management implies many different interactions with external parties like suppliers, customers and competitors. Cross-company innovation management supports companies regarding decisions on outsourcing of research and development, joint research and development with external parties and selection of suppliers for innovative products.

This book scientifically examines the topic of cross-company innovation management; an introduction to innovation management is given and cross-company innovation management is discussed with the help of a literature review. Based on these findings two models are developed, where each model reflects a game theoretic description of the relationship between an innovative company and its suppliers. Selected research questions of cross-company innovation management are analyzed and the impacts of the company’s decisions are shown. The main focus is on the economic analysis of the parties optimal contracting.

The first model reflects the make-or-buy decision of an innovative company regarding the manufacture of a component for a product innovation. Hold-up problems due to the company’s high investment in research and development as well as quality assurance in the case of external procurement are considered in the analysis.

The second model examines different contracts regarding their ability to incentivize a supplier who is entrusted with the development of an innovative component. The component’s future production costs are significantly influenced by the supplier during the development phase. Single and dual sourcing strategies are analyzed.

By combining the research field of innovation management with that of supply chain contracting the author makes an important and innovative contribution towards the development of this relatively new research direction.
