The publication documents the surnames of the city of Mainz in alphabetical order according to the address book for the years 1960/61 and explains their meaning.
The most common surnames are those from job titles such as Fischer, Müller, Schmidt, Schneider and Weber. The exact frequency of the respective surnames is given in the name articles. The simple surname refers to associated formations. Schmidt refers to Blechschmidt, Kleinschmidt, Waldschmidt, etc. Well-known bearers of the name are mentioned: the articles Merkel and Schumacher contain references to the former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the former racing driver Michael Schumacher.
The book also contains detailed compilations of Mainz surnames according to subject groups: surnames from given names such as Friedrich or Gerhard; Surnames based on origin such as Bamberger or Kissinger; Surnames from nicknames like Dürr, Scheel or Vogelbein. Reference should be made to the Latinized names of the humanist period such as Gerhardus, Huberty, Gravelius, Michaelis and Sartorius.
There are separate listings for the geographic origin of the Mainz surnames. Names from the Low German area are, for example, Arend, Dieckmann, Frerichs, Straatmann, Tenbruck. Surnames from neighboring languages are common: Bouillon, Cordier, Meunier (French); Antonietti, Caracciola, Podesta (Italian); Cuypers, Devosse, van der Veen (Dutch). Lithuanian surnames often contain the endings -at and -eit: Adomat, Adomeit, Endruweit, Petereit, Steppat. Names from the West Slavic languages, mostly Polish and Czech, are extremely common in Mainz: Andrezak, Blaschek, Darapsky, Instinsky, Platzek.
The book closes with a detailed bibliography, in which publications on foreign surnames in German can also be found.
