In the course of digitalization and the accompanying use of new technologies in the workplace, rapid and sometimes unpredictable changes are occurring in the world of work. In order to cope with these constant changes and to remain both innovative and secure long-term competitive advantages, the human ability to be creative is becoming an increasingly important resource for companies. At the same time, creativity—defined as the development of new and useful ideas—is a skill that differentiates people from new technologies and makes them irreplaceable for organizations.
Due to the ongoing globalization, strongly driven by technological change, companies can flexibly and quickly access expert knowledge all over the world. They often use communication technologies to connect employees from different countries and regions. However, this also means that teams are becoming increasingly heterogeneous, both in terms of culture, but also in terms of the languages spoken. As a result, employees are increasingly confronted with a multilingual work environment, often having to operate in a foreign language rather than their native tongue. Creative performance—both at the individual level and at the team level—must therefore also be performed in a foreign language. But what consequences the use of a foreign language has for the creativity of individuals and teams remains underexplored.
This dissertation offers first insights into how the use of a foreign language can influence different facets of creativity, both at the individual level and at the team level. It highlights both challenges and opportunities that can arise from using a foreign language instead of one's native language, particularly for the development of new and useful ideas.
