The worldwide climate change which occurs due to the high amount of economic operations shows that the environmental protection has become an important task. Since a high amount of environmental pollutions is caused by companies in the area of highway transportation, it is obvious that those companies are jointly responsible for the reduction of negative ecological impacts. Tools of fiscal policy and a risen public awareness of ecological problems lead to the fact that companies have to ask themselves in which amount they have to take responsibility for the environmental protection and what actions they take to reduce negative impacts on the environment when managing their vehicle fleet.

Due to the high pressure of competition and the uncertainty if an environmental-friendly vehicle fleet management is paying off economically, the acceptance and the evaluation of procedures of environmental protection has to happen in consideration of the economic goals of the company. In this context the following questions are discussed:

• Which economic challenges and tasks exist in vehicle fleet management, which decisions have to be made and which methods of solution are used?
• What are the incentives for vehicle fleet managers to reduce the negative environmental impacts of transportation processes and what starting points and strategies exist in vehicle fleet management in order to cope with the future challenges of environmental protection?
• How can higher standards for environmental protection be measured and in which way can future developments and actions be integrated economically worthwhile into methods for the solution of vehicle fleet management tasks?

To answer the first question an analysis of the current developments and challenges in highway transportation is made. Afterwards the different sectors of vehicle fleet management are presented in detail. In this regard the research focusses on the tasks which occur in vehicle fleet management and on the existing decision making methods. According to the different tasks and decisions the dissertation has a focus on the second and third research question after that and points out which cost-based and non-cost-based reasons exist for environmental protection. Moreover different possibilities to economically evaluate and internalize a higher level of environmental protection in vehicle fleet management are revealed.
