Developing new products within an innovation portfolio where the outcome of a single development project is influenced by other projects that capitalize on the same resources is a complex process. Managing the multiple dependencies between new product development projects and making the right decisions to guarantee a steady stream of new product launches in time and for the best portfolio results is difficult and firms suffer from project delivery deficiencies, such as delayed projects.

This doctoral thesis approaches new product development decision-making from a holistic perspective and specifically investigates speed. A comprehensive model is presented and serves as a guideline for new product development project decision-making by describing how project decisions are taken, what influences the decision-making process, and its outcomes. The findings offer a better understanding of the complex development processes and their interrelations in real business embedment and within organizational forces. It helps managerial practice by offering a visual framework to generally understand how project decisions are taken and what factors are influential. The multi-level perspective of the model refers to the portfolio context and depicts the interwoven dynamics between the projects, the portfolio, and the organization in a sophisticated, holistic, and practical analytical structure that enables the evaluation of a firm’s project decision-making process and strengthens the perspective that the entire process needs to be reviewed when project speed becomes a problem.
