About this book deutschenglish
The global COVID 19 pandemic is an unprecedented, still major challenge for the entire world population. Italy is one of the first countries in Europe to be hit very hard by the COVID 19 pandemic.
It is estimated that this crisis will lead to a significant increase in public debt in Italy. The paralysis of a significant part of the Italian economy in spring 2020 as a result of the „lockdown“ has made the economic situation even worse. This raises the question of how this debt burden will be paid in the future.
Due to this high national debt, Italy and also other affected EU member states run the risk of no longer being able to obtain loans on the free capital market at interest rates that are acceptable for them in the long term. A strong sign of solidarity is therefore needed, which can be found in a joint fiscal response by the EU member states.
But the EU solidarity community is characterised by different views and these come to the fore especially when there are crisis situations and joint decisions have to be made accordingly.
For the time after Corona, it is of great importance that the EU finds an appropriate pan-European response to the Corona crisis in order to support the EU member states, which were hit particularly hard by the health crisis, not only with health-related aid but also with financial means and thus to guarantee cohesion in the EU even in a very difficult emergency situation. Italy, in particular, is facing an extreme challenge.
