About this book deutschenglish

Covering the increasing global demand for electricity requires the development of reliable and economically efficient electricity systems. To achieve climate change objectives in a cost-effective manner makes it necessary to switch to power generation technologies based on renewable energies. The expansion of electricity supply systems requires careful planning, since large-scale generation capacities in the electricity sector (e.g. thermal power plants based on fossil fuels) are durable and cost-intensive capital goods. Modeling and analyzing the operation of power plants of an electricity generation system can be the basis for planning its expansion.

Therefore, the aim of this thesis is the development and application of a universally applicable analysis tool for the determination and investigation of a long-term expansion planning and short-term generation scheduling of electricity generation systems. Target of this analysis tool is to minimize the costs for the provision of electricity. To support electricity supply systems with low greenhouse gas emissions, the (fluctuating) feed-in from power systems based on renewable energies need to be adequately taken into account within the model approach. For this purpose, a distinction is made within the analysis tool between the planning levels of power plant expansion and operational planning. Furthermore, the provision of short and medium to long-term operating reserves and possible restrictions in the operation of controllable power generation technologies are considered in the model approach. This makes it possible to assess the reliability of electricity supply in order to address the possible challenges of integrating fluctuating and insufficiently predictable feed-in from power generation plants based on weather-dependent renewable energies.

The analysis tool is applied to an exemplary electricity generation system in the MENA region.
