The development of a reliable product requires the implementation of various reliability measures. Previous studies reveal that the implementation of reliability activities are required for increasingly complex products and show high potential for improvements. The application of reliability plans and programs is suitable to manage reliability activities in companies.

In order to increase the implementation of reliability activities in companies a two-level concept is developed. In the first level, there is company independent content described for reliability programs and plans. The focus is on the description of tasks, methods, models and information of reliability which is provided, retrieved and processed by the web-based application.

The application of contents requires an approach for a smooth implementation of reliability activities in companies. For this purpose, a concept to derive company specific content comes into action. It describes the application of reliability programs and reliability plans and the verification of the reliability plans through reliability cases in the company.

The essential mechanism is the implementation of a business rule which applies to the linked processes. It describes the reliability program by stating the substantial requirements on an embedded reliability process alongside quality relevant business processes. The reliability plan describes project specific or product specific activities, responsibilities and resources. It is integrated in the product development plan. Through the constant build-up of the reliability case, the achieved results are collected and can be used to prove the fulfillment of the reliability requirements towards internal or external stakeholders.

A reliability file will be developed to link these mechanisms. This file can be described by an information model. It includes and indexes reliability relevant information which accumulate during planning, developing, manufacturing and the usage of the products.
