When employees are suddenly left behind by their leader, this situation represents a chaotic and destabilizing event for businesses. Thus, a change in leadership or disruption in leadership tenure is becoming an increasingly important issue for organizations. A main objective was to provide systematic findings about the concrete impact of a sudden leader departure on follower outcomes.
The author Franziska Schmidl examines in three study series the harmful effects of a sudden leader departure on followers’ creativity and performance. Before leaders depart, they are likely to influence their followers with their individual leader behavior. It was therefore examined whether the leadership style (transactional and transformational) has a moderating effect on follower outcomes. Additionally, the role of followers’ affective state in situations of a leader departure were considered. The three study series build upon one another, with the final study series proposing and examining a complete working model of a sudden leader departure.
Finally, the author Franziska Schmidl discussed theoretical and practical implications for the leadership and business context. Suggestions for organizations were made.
