about this bookdeutsch english
Eutin, Preetz, Plön and Lübeck and other place names (toponyms) in the area of Eastern Holstein are of Slavic language origin. These place names, or toponyms, linguistic evidence of the presence of Slavic tribes in the Early and High Middle Ages in the area of Holstein. The Holstein toponyms reflect a dynamic social environment in which Slavic culture played a ma-jor and previously unrecognized role.
The Slavic tribes settled down in the area of the present-day eastern Holstein in the end of the 7th century. Germanic tribes used to live in this area before but they migrated during the so-called great migration period to the South and West. A significant social change during the time of Slavic settlements occurred in the middle of the 12th century when Middle Low-German-speaking settlers migrated to Eastern Holstein. The German tribes founded new settlements but also took over Slavic settlements and retained the Slavic toponyms.
Germanic tribes and Slavic people cohabitated Holstein during this time. The emergence of so-called mixed names indicates intensive language contact. However, in this context the onomastic theory has remained unconsidered up to now. The author deals with the question whether mixed names are reliable evidence of bilingualism or not. She analyzes the names from an onomastic and onomastic theoretical point of view. The author also considers historical and archaeological sources.
The author analyzes the origin of Holstein toponyms, the origin of which were previously only reconstructed abstractly. It is the target to adapt the toponomastic material of Eastern Holstein to the current state of research of German-Slavic onomastics.
