About this book deutschenglish

The paper presents the screening tool EBBA (Evaluation of work pressures at work). After its development and revision, it was validated in a convergent way using three different samples.

In general, there is a strong demand for scientific instruments measuring stress-experiences. One of the reasons to develop EBBA refers to the current social situation, e.g. the demographic development and the (presumed) increase of stress-related diseases. In addition, the German working condition act prescribes the recording and the accomplishment of psychological stress for every employer. While there are several measuring methods, most of them are either comprehensive procedures or they are limited due to their area of application and/or due to the identifiable factors. Furthermore, some of the existing methods don’t quite satisfy scientific requirements.

EBBA is based on different theories as for example, the Job-Demand-Control-Model (Karasek, 1979) and the Effort-Reward-Imbalance-Model (Siegrist 1996).

The content validation by a group of experts was the first step of the validation study resulting in a provisional screening-instrument. It was convergently validated using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire and the Work Ability Index‘. Based on the validation mentioned above the screening tool has been revised and construct validated. The final version of EBBA contains 20 items, which belong to four different areas, which again affect stress-experiences. Despite its shortness, EBBA boasts a remarkable internal consistency. Furthermore, it is objective and rather valid in terms of the convergent validation.

The results of the construct validation indicate a promising approach to a new screening tool although there is further need for research. Now, EBBA depicts a global measurement for the current perceived stress situation of a person by self-assessment. However, the standardization and review of, for instance, the retest reliability is pending. Nevertheless, further research of EBBA is recommended. It would support the development of the screening, resulting in a sufficient picture of the stress level of a person based on scientific facts.
