Since the implementation of science standards the demands for teachers have been increasing constantly. In countries like Germany or Switzerland nationwide competence evaluations at regular intervals are planned. But also innovations like the competency orientated A-levels or the new competency orientated senior classes in Austria are a challenge for teachers. Therefore it is more important than ever for teachers to diagnose students´ competences adequately and to make the right decisions for teaching based on these diagnostic results.

The book “Diagnosis in biology teaching – Development of diagnostic tools for the use by teachers in biology classes” examines in the first part science competences and their different aspects, which may be more or less challenging for students. Competency aspects then are structured in competency stage models. In the second part of this book, diagnostic tools based on the competency stages are presented. These diagnostic tools differ mainly in the type of tasks, which are used, ranging from closed task designs in the NAWI-IKM to mixed task designs (open, closed and hands-on) in the IKD-Bio. In the third part finally examples for using competency stages in biology classes are depicted.
